Captain's Choice Charter & Kayak
We
will choose one of several unique wilderness
locations based on tides, wind, weather, and the
time of season. Our Taku route is a scenic river
inlet with varnished cliffs and many waterfalls
that passes two glaciers. The Admiralty route
goes into brown bear country with views of old
growth forest and a beautiful boardwalk path
through a giant peat-bog. Marine mammals
including humpback whales are seen on our
Shelter routes, and the Berners route is an
estuary kayak with a great hike along sawmill
creek to a fantastic waterfall. All of our
routes are accessed via high-speed water taxi
and each destination takes about 45-minutes to
get to. The guide-naturalist keeps things
entertaining and outfits you with
state-of-the-art equipment before launching in
kayaks from the boat or a beach. Enjoy snacks
and beverages both on the boat and in the field.
No experience is necessary, and roundtrip
passenger van transport is included.

Tongass
Coast Wildlife Kayaking

Get away from the
crowds and on the water with marine wildlife!
Our passenger van transports you to a private
beach near sunshine cove from your Juneau
accommodations or cruise ship location. The
drive “out the road” takes about 45-minutes and
passes the Mendenhall, Herbert, and Eagle
glaciers. Our short but scenic highway also
offers up views across the Inside Passage to the
Chilkat Range while crossing several rivers,
peat-bogs, and old growth spruce-hemlock stands.
It is not uncommon to see porcupine, black-tail
deer, bear, beaver, martin, eagles, ravens, and
much more. Outfitting does not take long, and as
you pull away from the sand/gravel beach in a
tandem kayak, you get the feeling that our
saltwater is alive. It is! Fresh water pouring
into the coastline from our glaciers and rain
creates a sea curtain that is the perfect
environment for krill and phytoplankton
populations. Humpback Whales will stay in our
area throughout the summer feeding on the local
biomass before heading to Hawaii or Baja. It is
rare that we don’t encounter the majestic
humpback during the paddle. In addition to our
main attraction we also regularly see seals, sea
lion, porpoise, sea birds, and sometimes Orca.
Rain or shine, this is quite simply the finest
half-day kayak trip you will find. You need only
bring your camera and an appetite for adventure
because we outfit you with all equipment and
gear, healthy snack, and beverage. Join us
locals for a true Alaska experience within
nutrient rich melt-waters.

Glacier
View Sea Kayaking
Short
transfer by bus to Auke Bay. Upon arrival you’ll
be outfitted in life jackets and rain gear
before beginning your adventure. Your
experienced guide will teach you addling
techniques, then you’ll board modern, two person
kayaks with a new friend or traveling companion
for an experience that will leave you wanting
more. The stable yet nimble kayaks will
allow you to silently approach any wildlife in
the area and give you a sense of how the famed
Aleut Indians traveled the coastal
waterways of Alaska in search of pelts for the
Russian fur trading companies. You will be
led in groups of five to six kayaks to places
such as the Mendenhall Wetlands where you may
have the opportunity to view Mendenhall Glacier
from an ocean explorer’s point of view. Your
guide will explain the significance of places
like Smugglers Cove, the history of the
surrounding
area, and help identify local
flora and fauna.
You may see
porpoise, seals, sea lions,
eagles, herons, deer or even whales.
