Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour

This excursion
will give you the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
to experience commercial fishing from the deck
of a seasoned vessel, the same vessel as seen on
the Discovery Channel’s ‘Deadliest Catch’
program. The tour begins at Berth 3 Tender
Float where all guests are met and escorted to
the F/V Aleutian Ballad. After all passengers
are comfortably seated, the vessel heads out to
the fishing grounds. Protected from the elements
by the heated shelter deck, you will be
familiarized with the vessel and its colorful
history as a commercial fishing operation.
Fishing in the calm, protected waters of
Southeast Alaska will be a real treat. Bering
Sea king crab pots weighing over 700 pounds each
will be hauled up and landed on deck. Dungeness
crab, box crab, octopus and prawns, to name a
few, will be carefully retrieved as you observe
the vessel and crew works its way through the
gear.
Local sea life such as whales, sea otters, porpoises, and a bevy of sea
birds are sure to be curious about the action
and may very well come over to investigate. The
animals brought to the surface will be placed in
a live tank for your observation; then retained,
or gently released back into the wild. On the
return trip to town, snacks and beverages will
be offered. See and touch some of the animals in
the live tank. Crab, salmon, prawns and octopus
are likely candidates for a friendly photo
opportunity!
