Sightseing Tour in Wrangell
Island
Highlights & Native Cultural Tour
Wrangell is the only community in Alaska to have
been ruled by four nations, the Tlingit,
Russian, British and United States. The
community is rich in Alaska Native history. Your
fully guided tour will provide a glimpse into
the world of the Tlingit & Haida people. Once a
great nation, the Tlingit’s territory spread
from Dixon Entrance in the south near the city
of Ketchikan, to the small village of Yakutat,
the northern most community on the Inside
Passage.
Enjoy a personalized tour of Wrangell’s most
popular attractions in the comfort a seven
passenger van. You will visit these great sites:
Petroglyph Beach featuring ancient rock
carvings estimated to be between 8,000 to 10,000
years old; Muskeg Meadows Golf Course is
Southeast Alaska’s only USGA Regulated Golf
Course; Traditional Smoke Houses were
used extensively by the Native people, where
guests will learn how the fish is prepared as
well as what special wood is used to smoke this
Alaskan delicacy; Chief Shakes Tribal House,
located on a beautiful island in the middle of
Wrangell’s Reliance Harbor and the site of the
“Last Great Potlatch” of the local Tlingit
people; a Commercial Smokery Tour which
will allow guests to see the modern equipment
that is used to smoke salmon commercially;
Wrangell Museum’s collection reflects
Wrangell's colorful past. Tlingit house posts
carved in the 1700’s are thought to be the
oldest known house posts still in existence
today. A menagerie of Russian, English, Chinese
and Japanese artifacts depicts Wrangell’s
colorful past.
